TRAINING

Our kennel, located in Concord, NC is a fulltime training facility. Because of our wonderful “Sandhills” climate which is cooler in the summer (and more so than the vast majority of the south) and mild in the winter, it allows us to train without interruption year round.

Our philiosophy is that each dog is carefully evaluated for natural ability, maturity level and mental soundness. A dog is never pushed to the point where training is not fun, so the task never becomes boring or over bearing for the dog, physically or mentally. The dogs body language is our guide to advancement or repetition, whichever the case may be.

From as early as 12 weeks puppies begin our Puppy Preparation Program:

  • Basic Obedience ( kennel, heel, here, etc….)
  • Searching on a check cord
  • Learning to scent point
  • Teaching to establish a steady point and building confidence
  • Introduction to retrieving as a fun adventure and not chore.
  • Socialization of the puppy to all aspects of every day life.
  • Exposure to gun fire
  • Whistle breaking
  • Establishing a daily training (work) routine

These basic skills are the foundation for future advancement in training, leading into AKC Hunt Tests and all levels of NAVDHA which would also require:

  • Backing / Honoring
  • Introduction to Water

Advanced work would include:

  • Steady to Flush, Shot, and Fall
  • Retrieving i.e. ( Forced Retrieve )
  • Tracking
  • Duck Searches
  • Marked Retrieves
  • Out of Sequence Retrieves
  • Blind Retrieve – A dog must be already conditioned to “GO” when he is sent regardless of terrain, hazards, or demanding weather conditions. He must be able to “take a line” and hold in the direction that the handler sends him without veering left or right and have the confidence, drive, and determination of retrieving the bird without him ever having seen it fall.

Owners are welcome to visit at any stage of their dogs training (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY). We encourage owners to visit and spend a day at one of our occasional “training day” sessions with us. Here is a opportunity to catch a quick glimpse of what is expected of your dog in the field, ask questions, and owners to learn the how – to’s and specifics of handling their dog. Please check our SEMINARS page for more details.

“The finished gun dog runs the field with excitement and drive in search of game, points with style – showing staunchness and enthusiasm, retrieves with speed and urgency upon being sent on land or water and without flaw to hand.”
